Ressources I used

What I did

Learnt fundamentals of figure drawing
Practiced figure drawing
Started torso anatomy

5 things I learnt

Figure drawing workflow (back): 1/ Place fundamentals bones (occipital ridge, sacrum, iliac crest,) 2/ Draw buttock mass 3/ Draw legs in tapered cylinders 4/ Place great trochanter, ribcage, trapezius, deltoid, triceps/biceps 5/ Place had with occipital ridge at 2/3 of ears 6/ Place latissimus 4/ Attack upper torso and lower torso => ribcage to iliac crest 7/ Put the 4 back muscles between the 2 torsos (create shadows)
Calves are attached above the knee
Upper torso anatomy (bones) => refer to drawings for details
You need to understand how bones and muscles connect to each other to get the right posture for figure drawing, especially to draw out of imagination.

How I felt

One conclusion I made this week => I won’t be able to avoid anatomy if I want to draw good quality figure drawings. I have been trying to convince myself that I don’t need it, that there are so many simpler methods out there to draw human bodies. But I feel like I will have to go through it someday anyway, this initial learning (painful?) phase will give me solid basis that will save time and confusion in the future. Shortcuts are never a good idea when you learn a new skill… The most important thing you need is foundations.

There is a huge amount of knowledge to absorb, and it will undoubtedly take months to learn all the body parts, without practice included. So I need to keep in mind that this a long term learning, that patience is needed, and most importantly, take breaks a balance with other exercises to keep it fun.
