📆 Last Week Recap’
Ressources I used
- Figure drawing fundamentals – Lesson 2 by Richard Smitherman – This 2nd lesson focus on the back side of the body, and is as good as the lesson 1 from last week.
- Anatomy of the torso bones – Gets into the details of bones structure of the torso to take into account in artistic anatomy. This is an academic lesson.
- Anatomy books recommendation – Presentation of 2 classics to learn artistic anatomy. I personally don’t feel like I need them, but could be helpful for those who want to deep dive or learn better out of books.
- Book tour of Nicolas Nemiri – Another book tour from an artist I like. If you got free time, check him out.

How I felt
One conclusion I made this week => I won’t be able to avoid anatomy if I want to draw good quality figure drawings. I have been trying to convince myself that I don’t need it, that there are so many simpler methods out there to draw human bodies. But I feel like I will have to go through it someday anyway, this initial learning (painful?) phase will give me solid basis that will save time and confusion in the future. Shortcuts are never a good idea when you learn a new skill… The most important thing you need is foundations.
There is a huge amount of knowledge to absorb, and it will undoubtedly take months to learn all the body parts, without practice included. So I need to keep in mind that this a long term learning, that patience is needed, and most importantly, take breaks a balance with other exercises to keep it fun.
